This fall, I was a virtual retreat leader for the incoming class of UHP freshmen. I initially joined as a retreat leader before the pandemic, and thought it was due time to attend the elusive Camp Kern. As I transitioned into the program after I arrived to UC, I've only seen pictures and heard of the activities at the welcome retreat. Though I haven't attended the real welcome retreat, I imagine it was not quite like the virtual retreat.
As a (virtual) retreat leader, I had a cohort of UHP freshmen to regularly meet and connect with. Truth be told, it was reminiscent of a Peer Leader type program, like a "Peer Leader Lite" My meetings weren't required by any means, and honestly I think I learned more from them than they did from me. It was interesting to hear about their lives while attending virtual college away from home but from a dorm. The irony of the situation is not lost on me. I've learned that I enjoy being a mentor to students, and sharing my experiences in the context of helping others make the best decisions for themselves. but most of all, I would rather be a friend to younger students in person, and I will be applying to be a leader again in the spring, even if our lives are still virtual.
